: What is your first musical memory ?
faking
it....i was sitting at my aunt's player piano, you know the kind
that plays by itself. i can't remember the music but it reminded
me of a fair or carnival. i would sit there for hours watching the
keys move.
Which
artist or song has "affected" your childhood ?
"(they
long to be) close to you" by the carpenters.it was the prime
motivator in my early childhood schooling. my mom would convince
me to go to preschool by bribing me with promises of drivetime carpenters
sing-alongs. it got me to face the day....and i still need music
in the mornings to get going.
Did
you think of working in music ? What did you really want to
become later ?
i
wanted to be a painter. my dad is an arist. watching those colors
sink into the canvas seemed so peaceful.
Are
there any disturbing or nice sounds that have "affected" your childhood ?
voices
fading as the lights go down in a planetarium and the hum slowly
rising was the best sound in the world....and i'm still trying to
capture it in my music.
Did
your parents give you a musical education ?
yes
and no....i've always associated colors with sound. i learned
to compose pictures watching my dad paint - coming up with the sounds
was just the next step. my mother tried to teach me the piano but,
that lasted about a week. i started up with music years later when
my sister gave up on lessons and gave me her guitar.
Can
you tell us about a musical memory of your childhood (a concert,
a show..) ?
when i was very small...around 1975 my mom took me to see the beachboys
and something magical happened inside me....can't really explain
it, i remember holding back the tears in the middle of the last
song.
