JadeWeb : What is your first musical memory ?
I remember listening to some early 80’s power ballad on the radio in the car on my way to preschool. I’m not sure exactly which song, but I was very moved by it emotionally at the time. I also remember my dad listening to bluegrass music when we went on family vacations to lake michigan.

Which artist or song has "affected" your childhood ?
There are many. The first was probably michael jackson. my mother wouldn’t allow to watch the "thriller" video when it came out, but I snuck over to a friends house and watched it anyway. it really freaked me out !

Did you think of working in music ? What did you really want to become later?
I didn’t start considering a future in music until a bit later, maybe when I was in my teens. When I was very young I wanted to be an ice cream man. It seemed like the coolest job, but I’ve since learned that there are much better jobs to be had.

Are there any disturbing or nice sounds that have "affected" your childhood ?
I can distinctly remember the sound of cars pulling into our driveway as a kid. The end of our driveway was gravel so the sound was from the car tires pressing against the rocks. Usually I would see light from the car’s headlights come through my bedroom window and then hear the sound.

Did your parents give you a musical education ?
I took guitar lessons for a few years starting when I was about 10. My teacher was a guy named Robert Reese who was a blues guitarist. We mostly did improvisational blues stuff together where one of us would play rhythm while the other soloed over top. it was a lot of fun.

Can you tell us about a musical memory of your childhood (a concert, a show..) ?
When I was about 13 I was in a band with my brother and 7 other kids. we
formed the band specifically to play a battle of bands at the high school and we put on this really elaborate show with props and strobe lights and a smoke machine. It turned out that the judges left before the end of the show so we never found out who won.

Your childhood "Top 5"

This probably changed week to week throughout my childhood. but if you’d asked me when I was in 8th grade I would’ve said :

Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Descendents

Meat Puppets

Jane’s Addiction

The Cure
