james: My dad has always played saxophone and flute, and he practices with jazz play-along records. my earliest musical memory would be the sound of him practicing every night in the study, and especially hearing the guy on the record count off the song("a 1, a 2, a 1,2,3,4").

meredith: the first thing i can think of right now is playing 'hymn' by vangelis on the piano and feeling really sad and maybe crying a little

david: Watching my mom pump the pedals on the player piano, and watching all the keys move up and down on their own

James: When i was little i used to listen to the soundtrack to The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (by Ennio Morricone) all the time with my friends and we'd act the whole thing out. that's probably where i first connected music to emotion. another big record was Oxygene by Jean Michel Jarre.

Meredith: no answer

David: that song that goes "we gonna rock down to electric avenue" by eddie grant. i really liked the fat electronic sound in it and would rewind the tape just to hear it.

Pensiez-vous travailler dans la musique ? Que souhaitiez-vous devenir plus tard ?
James: I didn't really get interested in music until i was 12 or 13. before that my idol was Steven Spielberg, i wanted to be a film director. i used to make movies all the time with the family video camera, most of them somehow based on Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Meredith: i wanted to be a famous concert pianist. i also wanted to make movies.

David: i wanted to be a graphic desginer by day and artist by night (a bit like how it worked out). But if you get what you want you often want something new. i think about being a palentologist, fireman, or involved in sustainable architecture now.

James: There was more then one time when i stayed up half the night paralyzed with fear thinking that Frankenstein was outside my bedroom, but it ended up being my grandpa snoring. I always liked the sound of a fan on at night.

Meredith: the sounds from the exorcist. all that banging around, and her voice sounding a little backwards and maniacal. i still have bad dreams about it.

David: the buzzing of a single engine plane on a summer day always made me feel really lonely. All sudden, loud, sounds made me run away or cover my ears in fear. I was really scared of balloons popping at parties.

James: They tried to get me to play piano at least three times when i was young. i'd always take lessons for a year at most and then quit. they also put me into an art and music conservatory program where we learned music theory and singing and everything, but i quit that, too. they actually still try to get me to take lessons!

Meredith: yeah lots of piano lessons. i was really lucky i think to get that. i really loved it.

David: My mother paid for piano lessons when i was in my early teens, but i never learned how to read music or anything. my teacher would just teach me simple theory (which i have forgotten) and songs by memory.

James: in elementary school we had a music teacher and would do a concert for our parents every year. we had this one music teacher that was really crazy and he had us doing a rap song called "The Party Asteroid," by the Boogie Boys, and a Bob Marley song called "Rasta Man Vibration." there was even a drum machine on stage for "The Party Asteroid." The principal of our school ended up banning "rasta man vibration" before the show because it was too political.

Meredith: making up dance routines to this Mr. Rogers record i had, and my mom telling me the dancing was too sexy.

David: I remember seeing Raffi when i was really young, but i cant tell you if raffi even sang cuz it was so long ago. i remember dancing though so i guess there was probably music.
